I'm wearing gloves...

Not necessary just yet, but I am more comfy with them on.
Okay, not anymore since I'm in the station.

Dead tired right now. I suppose that's appropriate, figuring it's Halloween, but I'm sure zombie instructor isn't going to amuse most students.

"Cut fibers"

Somehow that became the phrase of the night.

Carved a pumpkin for the first time in years. It was pretty cool.

My cat ears and tail were just the right amount of costume.

Had some amazing pumpkin stew, pumpkin pie and pumpkin purin.

Wasn't forced to mingle. Got to just chill. And speak Japanese.

All in all, a great night.

Meieki plus Yummy Curry Kishimen equals Not-so-Cranky Mel

Though dragging a printer all the home was not cool. Back pain.

But that kishimen was really good.

And now back to Meieki. Just realized I should have bought an all-day subway pass but I'm not used to being out and about on the weekend.

Saturday off

Faced with a choice this morning of laundry or a few more hours of sleep, under my warm covers, I chose sleep. And it was good.

When I finally crawled out of bed, it was about the time I would be starting work. Instead, I changed, got my stuff together, made (a late) breakfast, and headed out.

Going to Meieki to do a bit more shopping then go back out again for Halloween.

This year Halloween is attached to work, so I'm not in the mood as much as I normally would be. Still love the holiday, but it's always just been an excuse to dress up and eat absurd quantities of candy.

Now it's about teaching American "culture" and unlike Thanksgiving and Christmas, which are about family, being grateful for what you have, and making sure everyone is stuffed with as much food as humanly possible, Halloween is a selfish holiday. "Look at me in my awesome costume!" "Give me candy!" It's the inherent nature of the day.

So I have mixed feelings. Spreading Halloween awesomeness is cool. Teaching it in a lesson makes sense. But...

I don't know, maybe I'm just tired.

Tokyu Hands!!

More retail therapy!!

Friday, October 28, 2011

You know, I used to wake up to the morning sunlight. Now I wake up to a pre-dawn sky.

It's pretty, don't get me wrong. But I think about how it's only October and I have two more months worth of getting darker.

Honestly? That scares me.

On a slightly related note, I'm awake right now. It's weird. Two nights of decent sleep and there has only been one major change. Well, yesterday was a trip out to I'm still not sure where. It was a lot of fun and a seriously needed refresher.

But the change? I'll post a pic later.

Right now, I'm on the train to work and I'm starving!

Need to wake up earlier and make breakfast. The biggest problem is that I have this thing where I feel I don't have time but I also don't want to use the microwave. Will have to work something out.

Retail therapy

Hell yeah!

I owed myself this since June. First paycheck. I was supposed buy this for myself with my first paycheck and it's taken me this long. Turned out to be the right choice since the price was cut dramatically about two months ago. You can guess what it is, right?

Now for the actual purchase I came out here to make?

Motivation has gone waay up with this little (big) purchase. Will be applying the Pomodoro Technique with this.

Maybe I'll make the other purchase on Friday before work...

No, Saturday morning before the Halloween party makes more sense. Yeah...

Can't wait to get home today♪

Playing w/ the fisheye

I want more of these lenses!

The question becomes: which ones?

Definitely effect ones, I don't feel I need color filters. Kaleidescope and warp probably fit my current needs.

Foolishly started two new blog projects. One is extremely low-maintenance so I'll link once I get a few posts up. I'll probably ask people to join in too; it's silly and simple but you guys know that's the kind of stuff that I love the most. I also havd a hope that it might end up revealing answers to questions I haven't thought of yet. Or at least lead to more questions.

In anycase, I can guarantee most first reactions will be WTF for people new to my life and those who are aware of what I am capable of will smile, give me the equivalent of a pat on the head and say "as long as you it makes you happy".

The other blog? We'll see. It'll take me a bit more time and I don't know if I'll be able to keep it up so I'm holding off showing anyone for now. I'll tell you this much: it'll be in both Japanese and English.

Alrighties, off to make a decently big purchase that is way overdue.

Lookie what I bought! Fish-eye lens!

Not sure if I'll ever (remember to) use it, but I want the sparkle one to. Maybe throw in the kaleidescope one for good measure.

Yay for (cell phonecagmer

Killing time

The soup and sandwich are quite nice, but the coffee's not that great. It's a tea place so I probably should have gotten the tea. I had it before and it was just okay so I thought I'd try the coffee. Bad move. From now on, tea it is.

I have a lesson at 2 and it's just not worth going home. Maybe I'll go to the library to avoid shopping... Aah! Just remembered something I needed.

Loft, then library.

I only went to sleep about 4 hours ago.

Today, today is a short day, but I'm thankful for it. I think I'm going to guarantee the short day later this morning.

Thinking about the darkness outside my window when I woke up this morning, December is looking scary.

And unrelated, or maybe it is, I'm hungry.

Daaamn I wish there was a 24 hour place or something around work that I could go to to wake up. Ooh, I think the udon place on Hirokoji is 24. And the CoCoIchi is too.

Ooh. Also, I feel asleep about 4 times writing this post. Blarg.

For most people, that's depressing.

For me, it means my days off are just around the corner.

And there is coolness to be had for this upcoming mid-week.

I also need to go to the US Consulate. An adventure of its own. Ten bucks says I get lost. Or show up 30min before it opens.

Anyways, home to bed!

Fat-burning tea

As it gets further into niku-man season, I notice I'm gaining weight again. While I could just stop eating niku-man, why would I want to do that?

So something else is going to have to give.

My current solution: Start drinking Healthya again despite the cost and walk more. And make time to climb. Damn, I want to climb.

Maybe Tuesdays. If I bring my gear with me, I can go right after work. I need to read my climbing book again for some off-wall training tips.

You know what? Just writing about climbing makes me feel better. I need to get on a wall.

I'd love to do some aerobic kick-boxing again, but that might make too big of a dent in my budget. Plus I don't think I could find a teacher better than the one I had in Boston.

That reminds me, I should start doing lunges and burpees when I'm home.

Okies. At work. Catch you laters.

And dinner!

Totally forgot to pack it.

Naked Heat, on the other hand, I left at home on purpose.
Yep, that's right, I'm on the second book. And I gotta admit, the first one was fun. I don't know hom much fun it would be without being a Castle fan, but fortunately I don't have that problem.

Thursday, October 20, 2011

She's not naked. She's holding a gun. Strategically.

Headed back to Nagoya with a backpack full of Halloween goodies and three Nikki Heat novels.

Nikki Heat is total official fan-fiction.

I love how Castle thanks his "dear friends" Nathan, Stana, Jon, Seamus, Susan, Molly, Ruben, and Tamala in the acknowledgements.

I also love the lines that have made their way into Heat Wave. How meta can you get?

Look what I got!

And the other two as well. Squee!

Dinner in under 10min

First photo taken @ 6:36. Second, @6:40. And it couldn't have taken more than 3 min to order and get it. 400yen.

And now I'm on the train. Yay for standing udon! It was a little salty though.

Maybe I'll try the ramen next door on my way back.

Shinking it

850 for the Quartet ticket plus 500 for a weekday Shink comes to 1350. When I can Shink it for 60 more than regular fare on the local and take half the time, I really can't say no.

Sure I could save 500 and take 30 more min, but it's not just the time. It's Shink vs local. And figuring I only go twice a month instead of every week, calculate 400 for the subway to and from, and 1700 to and from Toyohashi, then 920 on locals to and from my grandmother's... I can afford to treat myself to the Shink.

Also awesome, the Shinks still play Ambitious Japan when approaching the stations in this direction. Nothing like TOKIO for my tired soul.

A little bit of autumn

That's worth 200yen, don't you think?

Finally settling? Do I dare believe it?

Did laundry and I bought a bit of stuff from the 100yen shop.

Going to my grandmother's in a bit for the night.

LA-Nagoya, Little Tokyo-Sakae

Yeah, I know it's 3am...

It's morning!

Gots work this morning.

And then it's my days off!

New pens!

When I think about how much I spend on stationery, or better yet, how much I want to spend on stationery, clothes shopping looks so much more affordable.

I finally got into the world of Frixion pens. Erasable pens. In lots of colors. It's a miracle I waited this long.

These are far from perfect since they erase because of heat. So a day in the sun would probably be a bad thing. I doubt it'll be much of a problem for lesson notes, but it's definitely not ideal for anything I want to keep permanently.

Sarasa is still my general pen of choice, but cutting down on correction tape is probably a good thing.

And now with more colors, my lesson notes will be even more like elementary school. Yay? Definitely will be driving away the salarymen.

And totally unrelated, there's a TOKIO ad hanging above me in the train. You have no idea how much I want to take it and hang it in my room.

They're the CM personalities for a keitai card RPG and apparently the game has now created TOKIO cards. Leader's guitar looks like a bazooka. Taichi and Yamaguchi are heros 勇者, Matsuoka is a knight 騎士, Nagase is a swordsman 剣士, and Leader is a soldier 戦士.

Color me amused.

Gorgeous day

And I'm going to be in an office building for all of it.

Right, positive thoughts.

Positive thoughts.

You know what? I can't think of anything other than I was able to wake up this morning, so I'm just going to leave it at that.

Last train home

I have much to say. But not enough conciousness or battery left to say it.

It's going to be a long day

I am such a sucker.

And my weekend is going to suck because of it.

Silver lining? I'm trying to find something other than "I'm employed and most of the time is going to work and that means money"
Nah. All goes back to sucky weekend. That is going to lead into a hectic week. *sigh*

Sorry about the negativity. Will try to post something more positive later.

Back to work

Spending the last day of my week off doing nothing was definitely the right choice.

I'm still not entirely ready to go back to work, mainly because of the dress code, but at least I'm not tired.

Add to that the glory of being more of a back up instructor in the morning, and I get days like today: sleeping in for an extra hour. Yay.

Today I try out my new suit. I'm hoping to get another one and just change at work every day. I dislike commuting by subway in a suit. Especially the shoes. Maybe I should just carry around the shoes.

In anycase it's cash I don't quite want to spend so I'm going to try to hold out until payday.

Potato chips

Our house manager dropped off some potatoes at the house.

So I made potato chips. Not as easy as when I make them at home, no big oven, but the potatoes are good so they're not too bad.

Photo post!

So this is:

Black sesame kinako ice cream in Gion

Kamo River

A weird coffee shop in Shijo

Stairs up to Kodai-ji

Anyone familiar with Kyoto will realize I made a huge circle. Didn't mean to, but I'm glad I did.

Headed back to Nagoya

Sorry I stopped posting today. Lots of walking and very little rest.

I'll probably post either on the Shink or tomorrow.

An interesting trip.

Spent waaaaaay too much money. But it was good. I feel refreshed and ready to face being 30.

Chillin in a cafe vs KIYOMIZU!

Watching hordes of junior high and high school kids get off the bus each time a bus stops. I know they're all going to Kiyomizu.

I'm seriously going to have to take a chill approach to this trip. Not that I didn't know that already.

Behind me, the cafe's regulars are chatting with the owner about the changes that have happened to the city.

One said he was totally against the Kyoto when they were building it, but now when he gets back from somewhere at night and sees that white glow, he feels like he's home.

It's nice to hear locals talk about a city that has always been associated in my mind with tourists.
After a nice quite stroll up the hill, I got to the temple. I knew what was waiting for me, but WOW!
I keep repeating "Patience, patience, patience." in my head. Over and over and over.

Now I'm waiting to drink from the Otowa spring. It's like waiting in line for Disneyland. Complete with children. And, well, tourists. Only thing missing are the locals with the annual passes.

When I came here a while ago, I was told each of the three stood for something, but a lady at the temple said it's always just been wishes.

Going to have to look into this later...

Now onto Sannei-zaka and Ninen-zaka.

And I'm off!

Have checked out, put my bag in a locker and am on a bus to Kiyomizu.

It's cool enough for the poncho! Yay! This will end soon.

Jumped into a small coffee shop next to the bus stop. Not a Nagoya morning but it's breakfast. The store I want to visit opens at 9. 30 mor3minutes.
