Atsuta Jingu

So I got myself out of the house and to Atsuta Jingu for a walk. Only my second time there, but it's quickly become a favorite place. The trees! So pretty. And some are huge! Over a thousand years old.

I usually turn off my music on shrine grounds but I had to let Taichi's song play out. He loved it here when he came for おさんぽジャパン. He's got a thing for trees too.

Refreshed and relatively recharged.

Time to pick up some stuff at Tokyu Hands (I swear, it's for necessary things this time.)

Forever TOKIO!

Was feeling like crap thIs morning.

Worse than I have for a while.

And for no particular reason.

It just happens.

And I deal, because, you know, life.

But today, I popped in the DVD that came with my new TOKIO single that I picked up yesterday.

Feeling much better.

It's always been these 5 that make getting out of bed easier. For years.

All right.

Time to get ready for the day.

Retail Therapy!

Went to Shinseido to pick up my new TOKIO CDs (yes, plural) and dropped by Tokyu Hands where I proceeded to buy a bunch of stuff.

Refills, new year card stuff, another new pencase, some gifty things, and other bits and bobs. Also, tracked down the insoles that best fit my feet.

Fun stress test for my Galactic Empire bag! Whee!

Turning Pages: The Martian/An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth

I finished The Martian in a binge read last night (I should say, this morning) and it was worth it. Totally recommend it. An awesome read.

I need to wait until February to watch the movie, but グラスホッパー, Mockingjay, and The Force Awakens will keep me busy.

And so now I've moved on to a book I picked up in England. Another astronaut book. This time non-fiction.

I really enjoyed the TED talk Chris Hadfield gave and that drew me to his book in a bookstore in Penrith. I spent the cash then instead of waiting until I was back in Japan because I wanted something to entertain me on the train to London, and later, the flight back to Nagoya, but I got distracted.

Now with my brain totally about astronauts and reverting back to the space nerd I was as a kid (How nerdy? In high school, I won a gold medal in the Astronomy event at state level in Science Olympiad.), I've picked up the book again and am currently devouring it.

Good stuff.

My abs!

So like I said yesterday, I picked up The Martian. I started reading it on the train home and quickly fell for Mark Watney (the main character).

What I didn't account for was how much he, well, Andy Weir (the author) would make me laugh and how that laughter would constantly do a number on my sore post-training abs.

It's good pain on all accounts, but damn! it hurts in a rather stupid way. Which makes me laugh more and, well, you get the picture.

And now to get back to my book.

I'm going to be broke by December

So I returned yet again to the infamous store with the yellow bags. And yet again was unable to resist the power of the Force.

I mean, look at it! It says Galactic Empire in Japanese! The back says Opened in theaters in Showa 52.

And it's a totebag. I was just looking for a totebag! (Yes, I just got a new bag, but that one is an everyday messenger bag. Completely different things.)

It cost as much as my R2 and I feel about it the same way: Zero regrets.

Also picked up The Martian at Maruzen. And some postcards. Whee!

Post-training-wise, today has a bit of sleepiness to it. Will report more on soreness tomorrow.

Now to head back to the house.

New bag!

I ordered this bag in June from a company called Jiyoh at CreaMa.

They had a number of various bags there, but you could also custom order color combinations. I couldn't resist. Even with wait list of 4 months, I wanted one with *my* colors. Filled out and order form, paid up front (so it would be a present from my past self when it arrived), and then just waited.

On Tuesday, I got an email that it was finished and ready to be shipped. When I told them I was going to be out of town for a few days, they adjusted the shipping date so there would be a higher chance of me being home. Props for awesome customer service! And I was, in fact, able to be home when it arrived.

And I love it.

I'm really glad I went with these colors. I think the guy who took my order was surprised I went with pretty run-of-the-mill color choices, but I love the turquoise blue peeking through the black and the bit of blue on the back pocket. The inside is a light grey so it's pretty easy to find stuff. Nice heavy canvas. It's the right size to fit my wallet, planner, notebooks, and iPad. And it matches my Millenium Falcon pass case. Also, lots of pockets!

Been using it for three days and it's been great so far. I'm looking forward to seeing how it changes as I break it in.

Wish I had it for England and Tokyo/Kyoto, but now that it's here I can take it on a bunch of other adventures.

Hurts so good

Not as bad as yesterday, when I couldn't use the stairs and had to use the escalator, but still sore from Monday's training. My back around my shoulder blades, my thighs, and my butt. Good stuff.

And while still being sore, I'm craving some movement, so I'm taking a walk around my grandmother's place.

After the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, the quiet is a welcome relief. And I've seen a few things that make me want to take up drawing again. Combined with the need to get off my lazy butt when I'm at my grandmother's, I may have found a new habit. Time will tell if it actually becomes a habit.

Alrighties, heading back for lunch.

Yay Training Day!

Walking over 20,000 steps almost every day this past week, it's not like I didn't get any exercise, but I did miss not having my weekly training session. Plus today I got 30 min of body care too because it's my birthday month. Score! Refreshed and ready to go back to reality. Or as ready as I will be.

Life is good.

Now I'm at Loft picking up more Star Wars merch for a friend (hi Kathryn!) because Loft Nagoya has more than the Shibuya Loft. Viva the inaka! (Even though it isn't really *that* inaka here.)

To Nagoya!

Pampering myself with a reserved seat on a Nozomi. The back row, of course, with my DisneySea merch filled suitcase resting comfortably behind me.

I'm getting into Nagoya around 9, then it's the half-hour trek back to the house.

First, my salmon and ikura dinner. いただきま〜す!

Checked in. Hotel is NICE.

Went to Uragu and stocked up.

Walked along the Kamo River.

Now waiting for flaming ramen.

To Kyoto!

A quick pic of Mt. Fuji along the way.

I couldn't resist.

Black Thunder at the Thunder Gate.

Good morning SkyTree

Damn, what a view.

Today is Asakusa and then we're off to Kyoto.

Sky Tree!

Checked safe and sound. Room's pretty typical. A bit far from the station, but check out that view!!

Heading out for dinner soon.

Very happy about the view. :)

Slight change in plans

Didn't get to meet with the friend for lunch, but with the extra time, I was able to check in to the hotel, drop off my suitcase, get an emergency charger for my phone, take a stroll along the Sumida River, visit Sensoji, realize just how unadjusted I am to crowds right now, pick up a protection charm, pay my respects and pray for safe travels, and get to the station to ride a direct train to Narita to pick up my travel buddies.

All in all, I'd say that's productive. :)

Just gotta remember to breathe.

So many people...

Here we go!

Headed to Meieki to take the Shink to Tokyo.

I opted for my rolly suitcase for ease of riding trains (though transfers might be a bother), making it easier on my shoulders, and having space for the inevitable awesome yet bulky DisneySea merch.

That being said, I packed more clothes for this 8-day trip than my fortnight trip to England. Oh, the temptation of having space to spare. I totally gave in there.

First stop today is meeting up with a friend from elementary school who by pure magic coincidence also just arrived in Japan for a week vacation.

Then it's off to NRT to pick up my travel buddies for the next week. It's going to be awesome. Expect Tokyo and Kyoto Instagrams.

And after I get back, I'll finish up the London ones. :)

Mind the closing doors

Just saw a guy get caught in the closing subway doors. Facing forward and sandwiched from both sides perfectly on his shoulders. The doors obviously had to open again and he and his friend jumped on to an already crowded train.

Part of me wishes I had a camera. I mean it was perfect. Like it had been choreographed.

In other news,
-My R2-D2 is the cutest thing ever
-I have one day left of work until vacation time. Need to pack.
-Soreness report: Just the calves now, though the ribcage/upper abs were feeling it yesterday
-Seriously, my R2-D2 is adorable.

More Star Wars Merch

So I went back for more. Part recon, part realization there are others who may want some of this action.

And while I resisted the silicon Death Star ice mold, I fell to the R2-D2 talking fridge gadget. He's just so cute! I was going to play with him at work, but batteries not included.

Star Wars Merch has always been my Achilles heel.

Star Wars!

After today's training session (I'm going to feel that tomorrow. I predict calves and hamstrings.), I dropped by the Junkudo in the LOFT building to pick up the newest ONE PIECE and 図書館戦争.

Those in my possesion, I went up to the stationery floor and the variety floor Where lo and behold The Force Awakens merch! So much merch! I love that Japan loves Star Wars!

As I tried to contain my excitement, I realized that by pure coincidence I was wearing my Angels Star Wars Night shirt. Slightly embarrassing, but that didn't stop me from acquiring a glorious haul of merch. Will post pic later.

I have a bad feeling that I'm setting myself up for the same disappointment that came after Episode One, but I can't help myself. It looks awesome.

I'm supposed to do some translation tonight, but with two books and all the glorious Star Wars merch...Priorities. Right? :)
